Claude Code vs Codex vs Cursor: Best AI Coding Agent (October 2026)

The short answer

Claude Code is the strongest default for most developers: it runs in the terminal and your editor, and it is included in the $20 Claude Pro plan. Codex is the best fit if your work already lives in ChatGPT, and it starts cheaper at $8. Cursor remains the most capable in-editor agent, but its ownership changed in August 2026 — it is now a SpaceX subsidiary alongside xAI, and its $8 tier only runs Grok models. Pick on where you want the agent to live, not on benchmark scores.

Which AI coding agent should you use?

The question changed in 2026. It used to be which autocomplete is smartest; now it is where you want an autonomous agent to run — in your terminal, inside your editor, or in the cloud off a ticket. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor answer that differently, and all three are good enough that the deciding factors are cost structure and workflow fit.

Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool, and the most terminal-native of the three. It reads a whole repository, edits across files, runs tests and drives git, which makes it strong on the unglamorous work — migrations, refactors, chasing a failing test through four layers. It also runs in VS Code, JetBrains and on the web if you would rather not live in a shell.

The pricing is what makes it the default recommendation. Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan, so $20 a month for Claude Pro covers both a general assistant and a coding agent. Heavier users move to Max at $100 or $200 for 5× and 20× the usage, and the current flagship model, Opus 5.5, landed on 22 September 2026 at 40% lower running cost than Opus 5.

Editor’s pick — best default

If you have no strong existing preference, start with Claude Pro at $20. You get a capable assistant and a capable coding agent for one subscription, with no separate tool to buy.

Codex

Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, and its advantage is reach: it spans the ChatGPT desktop app, a CLI and cloud runs, so a task can start on your laptop and finish on OpenAI’s machines. It runs on the GPT-6 family, which rolled out across September and October 2026 — Astra first, then Sol and Luna, then the GPT-6 Instant interface.

It is also the cheapest way in, since ChatGPT Go at $8 a month includes it, and it is the obvious pick if your team already pays for ChatGPT. For greenfield work — scaffold this API, build this page — it tends to feel faster than agents that insist on reading the whole repo first.

Cursor

Cursor is still the most polished in-editor agent, and if you want one application that is both your editor and your agent, it remains the best version of that idea. What changed in 2026 is who owns it: SpaceX completed its acquisition of parent company Anysphere on 14 August 2026, and Cursor now sits inside the same group as xAI, which builds Grok.

That has a practical consequence for buyers. The $8 Plus plan runs Grok models only; reaching Claude or GPT models through Cursor means Premium at $30 a month, which is also where cloud agents and AI code review appear. Above that, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 buy more usage rather than more capability.

What about Copilot, Cline and Devin Desktop?

Three others are worth knowing about. GitHub Copilot is still the lowest-friction option if you want AI inside the editor you already use and the deepest GitHub integration. Cline is open source and free, with your own API key — the most transparent on cost, and the hardest to cap. And Windsurf no longer exists under that name: Cognition rebranded it Devin Desktop in June 2026.

How to choose

  1. 01Want one subscription for assistant and agent? → Claude Code, via Claude Pro at $20.
  2. 02Already paying for ChatGPT? → Codex, included from the $8 Go plan upward.
  3. 03Want your editor and agent to be one app? → Cursor, but budget $30 for non-Grok models.
  4. 04Want to keep VS Code or JetBrains exactly as-is? → GitHub Copilot.
  5. 05Want full control and no subscription? → Cline, and watch your API spend.

One note on benchmarks: leaderboard positions among these tools change with every model release and rarely survive a month. We have deliberately left scores out. Every option here is capable enough that workflow fit and cost structure will affect your week far more than a few points on a coding benchmark.

Frequently asked

Is Claude Code included with a Claude subscription?
Yes. Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan — Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually), and Max from $100 a month for 5× or $200 for 20× the usage. You can also use it by paying API rates directly instead of subscribing.
Who owns Cursor now?
SpaceX. It announced the all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor’s parent company, in June 2026 and completed it on 14 August 2026. Cursor operates as a subsidiary in the same division as xAI, the lab behind Grok, which is why Grok models are the ones bundled into Cursor’s cheapest paid tier.
What happened to Windsurf?
Cognition rebranded Windsurf as Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026, and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop. The Cascade agent was retired on 1 July 2026 and replaced by Devin Local. Existing settings carried across automatically, so users were not required to migrate anything by hand.
Which AI coding agent is cheapest?
Cline is free and open source, but you pay API costs for whichever model you point it at, so heavy use can exceed a subscription. Among subscriptions, Codex and Cursor both start at $8 a month, though Cursor restricts that tier to Grok models. Claude Code starts at $20 but includes a full assistant subscription alongside it.
