Windsurf Is Now Devin Desktop: What Changed and Should You Switch?

The short answer

Windsurf still exists — it is called Devin Desktop now. Cognition rebranded it on 2 June 2026 through an ordinary update that carried settings across automatically, and windsurf.com redirects to devin.ai/desktop. The substantive changes are that the Cascade agent was retired on 1 July 2026 in favour of a rewritten agent called Devin Local, and the editor now opens on an Agent Command Center that tracks local and cloud sessions together. If you liked Windsurf, there is no forced migration and no reason to leave; if you were choosing between editors, judge it on the new agent, not the old name.

What happened to Windsurf?

If you went looking for Windsurf recently and ended up on a page about Devin, nothing is broken. Cognition — the company behind the autonomous agent Devin — acquired the Windsurf business and renamed the editor Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026. The old domain now permanently redirects to devin.ai/desktop, which is why search results and old bookmarks land somewhere unexpected.

The rename shipped as a normal over-the-air update rather than a migration. Settings, keybindings and projects carried over on their own, which is why a lot of users only noticed when the icon and the name changed.

The short version

Same editor, new name, new agent. Nothing to reinstall, nothing to export. The one real loss is Cascade, which was retired on 1 July 2026.

Cascade is gone, and that is the real change

The rename is cosmetic; retiring Cascade is not. Cascade was the flow-based agent that defined how Windsurf felt to use, and it was fully retired on 1 July 2026. Its replacement, Devin Local, is a ground-up rewrite in Rust that Cognition says is around 30% more token-efficient and adds subagents — the ability to split a task and work on parts of it in parallel.

In practice that means the muscle memory moves. If your workflow was built around Cascade’s conversational flow, the new agent is a different shape, and the Agent Command Center pushes you toward thinking in queued sessions rather than one continuous conversation.

Devin Desktop

The editor keeps what made Windsurf worth using: deep codebase understanding, multi-file editing and an approachable interface that does not need much configuration. What is new is that the local editor and Cognition’s cloud agent now share one surface, so a task can be handed between your machine and the cloud without changing tools. There is still a free tier with a daily quota, and paid plans start at $20 a month.

Should you switch away?

Not on account of the rename. A rebrand is not a reason to move, and the automatic settings migration means staying costs you nothing. There are two situations where looking around makes sense: if Cascade was specifically why you chose the editor, since that is the thing that no longer exists, or if you want an agent in the editor you already use, in which case GitHub Copilot or Claude Code will fit better than any standalone editor.

  • —Happy with the editor → stay. Nothing is being taken away except Cascade.
  • —Chose it for Cascade specifically → try Devin Local before deciding, then compare Cursor.
  • —Want to keep VS Code or JetBrains → GitHub Copilot or Claude Code instead.
  • —Want a single app for editing and agents → Devin Desktop and Cursor are the two real options.

Frequently asked

Is Windsurf discontinued?
No. It was renamed, not shut down. Cognition rebranded Windsurf as Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026 and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop. The editor is still actively developed and still has a free tier.
Do I need to reinstall or migrate anything?
No. The rebrand arrived as a standard over-the-air update and existing Windsurf settings were ported to Devin Desktop automatically. You do not need to export projects or reconfigure the editor.
What replaced Cascade in Devin Desktop?
Devin Local, a rewritten Rust-based local agent. Cognition retired Cascade fully on 1 July 2026 and says the replacement is roughly 30% more token-efficient and supports subagents for working on parts of a task in parallel.
Is Devin Desktop the same thing as Devin?
They are related but not identical. Devin is Cognition’s autonomous cloud agent, which takes a task and works on it remotely. Devin Desktop is the local editor formerly called Windsurf. Since the rebrand they share the Agent Command Center, so you can see local and cloud agent sessions in one place.
